Floor restoration and cleaning expert, Green Man recently renovated a slate floor at a beautiful home in Somerset. Dull and tired from daily wear and tear, the stone floor spanned the kitchen, hallway and lounge, totalling around 75 square metres.
Slate is very hardwearing and it’s generally far less porous than natural stone. It is, however, vulnerable to oil and grease, so benefits from periodic deep cleaning. It’s also important to protect tiles, as you would limestone.
On arrival, the Green Man team swept the stone to remove surface debris. They then used a weighted rotary machine which applies a mix of hot water and their recommended treatment – ECOPROTEC Stone & Tile Intensive Cleaner – to deep clean the tiles and grout.
ECOPROTEC Stone & Tile Intensive Cleaner is a high-performance intensive cleaner that’s formulated to react with and remove oil, grease, wax and ingrained dirt. It can safely be used on all types of stone and tile at a variety of dilutions, according to residue build-up.
Brushes on the bottom of the weighted rotary machine gently breakdown the residue and the cleaning solution is then given time to dwell and to work on any stubborn soiling, to ensure optimal results are achieved.
The bottom of the rotary can be manually changed, so that the cleaning pads and brushes can be adjusted to differing levels of abrasion to suit the floor type, finish and condition. Although the machine cleans grout lines, it doesn’t always get into the grooves sufficiently, so these were tackled on hands-and-knees using a grout brush; this ensured a thorough clean and a uniform finish. A wet vac was then used to remove all of the remaining slurry and ‘air movers’ positioned to force-dry the floor ready for sealing. Water-based impregnating sealer – ECOPROTEC Colour Enhancing Stone Sealer – was then applied to the clean, dry slate.

It subtly enhances the natural floor tone, without changing the character, and it’s great for protecting against staining, as well as repelling water, oil and grease. The customer had previously expressed concern with some minor scratches on the slate and the sealer is also designed to fill in minor blemishes and diminish their visibility,” explained Green Man’s Linsey Morris.
