Autumn brings an increased risk of stubborn staining to tile and stone floors. From pumpkin residue and food spills to candle wax, paint and firework-related marks, seasonal activities can leave behind contaminants that require targeted cleaning. On natural stone and other sensitive surfaces, selecting the appropriate cleaning treatment is essential to achieve effective results, while helping to preserve the material’s appearance and integrity.

ECOPROTEC Intensive Cleaner and ECOPROTEC Joint Residue Remover can be used together to tackle different types of stubborn stains on tile and stone surfaces.

ECOPROTEC Intensive Cleaner is an alkaline-based cleaner formulated to break down organic residue, fats, oils, wax and grease.  This makes it suitable for tackling pumpkin residue, face paint, fake blood, sugary treats, hair dye, candle wax and drinks.  It’s also highly effective at removing general dirt from porous surfaces.

ECOPROTEC Intensive Cleaner is suitable for all types of natural stone – including limestone, travertine, slate, terracotta, marble and granite – as well as porcelain and ceramic, regardless of the tile’s finish.  As with any deep cleaner, it’s always best to test the solution on an inconspicuous area first, before treating the entire surface.  Intensive Cleaner can be diluted according to the severity of the stain – either at a ratio of 1:10 in warm water for mild staining or 1:3 for more stubborn marks.  In both cases, apply the solution with a cloth or mop.

How to ECOPROTEC Intensive Cleaner

For mild stains, using a 1:10 dilution, apply the cleaner and then rinse by wiping the tiles thoroughly with a clean, damp cloth.

For more severe staining, using the 1:3 dilution, apply, then agitate the tiles with a scrubbing brush.  Leave it to act for 5–10 minutes, keeping the tiles wet by applying additional solution as needed, then agitate again. Remove the solution and rinse the tiles thoroughly with clean water to neutralise the surface.

For more stubborn wax residue and for paint stains, we recommend treatment with ECOPROTEC Joint Residue Remover.  A non-caustic remover, this treatment can also be safely used on all types of natural and engineered stone.

How to apply ECOPROTEC Joint Residue Remover

Apply the product generously to stains with a cloth or brush; always protect hands with suitable gloves.  Work in manageable areas – as far as you can reach without treading into the cleaner.  Leave it to react for up to 30 minutes, reapplying the product if it starts to dry out.

Using a coarse, stiff brush or suitable black emulsifying pad, remove the softened residue from the surface. Repeat the process if any staining remains. Lastly, rinse tiles with ECOPROTEC Intensive Cleaner, using a 1:3 dilution applied with a cloth, mop or brush.  Then, rinse again with plenty of water and leave to dry.

Topping up protection

If the surface sealer on your tiles is worn or has been in place for some time, it’s worth applying a new coat after deep cleaning to restore the protective layer. This can be carried out once the surface is sufficiently dry, which may take at least 24 hours. We recommend ECOPROTEC Ultimate Sealer for natural stone and barrier treatment, ECOPROTEC Pre Grout Protection for matt porcelain pavers.
